Training Activities

The member of the Home Guard shall on enrolment be required to undergo basic course of training for a period of a month and a half as follows:

  • Daily training of not more than an hour for the first fifteen days (exclusive of holidays) - Physical training and foot drill without arms and lectures on Home guard Organization and duties of Home Guards and Police.
  • On completion of the fifteen days of training, members of the Home Guard shall be required to come on alternate days for training of about an hour and half for fifteen days in First Aid, Fire- Fighting, Rescue work and weapon training.
  • Thereafter, members of the Home Guards shall be called out at least once a month either for training or for practical work.

On completion of the basic course of training prescribed in sub-rule (1) an advanced course for a period of about a month and half shall be conducted for members of the Home Guard above the rank of Assistant Section Leader. The advanced course shall comprise of lectures and practical work on the following subjects:

  • Organization and Man–management
  • Civil Defence Measures
  • Emergency Relief
  • Map reading, field craft and automatic weapons.

The members of the Home Guard may be called out for training or duty by any Police Officer not below the rank of a Station House Officer under the instruction of the Commissioner of Police or the Superintendent of Police.

TAMIL NADU HOME GUARDS AND CIVIL DEFENCE TRAINING INSTITUTE

As per the G.O.(Ms)No.1104, Home dept, dated:06.05.1982 Government had sanctioned training institute for Home Guards at Trichy and the same could not be carried out for want of site/building at Trichy. Subsequently as per G.O.(Ms)No.292, Home(Pol.XIV)Dept, dated:19.02.1993 sanction was accorded to transfer the training institute to Ooty, Nilgiris district.

The institute was started at Ooty on 12.10.1994. The Superintendent of Police, Nilgiris district is the ex-Officio Principal of the training Institute and Area Commander of Nilgiris is the ex-officio Vice Principal of the Training Institute. The following is the strength in the Home Guards and Civ-il Defence Training Institute, Ooty sanctioned as per the G.O.(Ms)No.1855, Home(Pol.XIV)Dept, dated:23.12.1997.

Every year approximately 350 Home Guards personnel are being trained in batches in various courses relating to rescue and relief operations in Tamil Nadu Home Guards and Civil Defence Training Institute at Ooty.
